How You Can Give Back in Austin During Thanksgiving

November is all about giving thanks, and we’d like to take it a step further and focus on giving back to the local Austin community. At TechSpace Austin, we are hosting a donation drive for The Central Texas Food Bank with the goal to collect 300 lbs. of non-perishable food items. With the help of our local members and community partners, we hope to make a big impact this month!

In addition to the donation drive, here are five of our favorite local Thanksgiving volunteer opportunities:

    The Central Texas Food Bank

    When: November 1-23rd

What: The Food Bank offers 3-hour shifts throughout the weeks ahead of Thanksgiving to adults and children to organize and sort donated grocery items in their facilities.

    Austin Empty Bowl Project

    When: November 20th

What: The Austin Food Bowl Project is an event bringing local restaurants and artists together to benefit various children’s hunger programs. Artists can donate handcrafted bowls that are sold at the event where they are filled with local eats from participating restaurants. Volunteers are needed for two hour shifts during the event.

    Thundercloud Sub’s Turkey Trot

    When: November 19th– 24th (Event)

What: Thundercloud’s annual Turkey Trot takes place Thanksgiving morning and benefits Caritas of Austin, a non-profit benefiting low-income and homeless families and individuals. Along with participation in the run itself, volunteers are also needed to help with registration and event logistics. Find out about registering for the run and volunteering here.

    Gobble Gobble Give

    When: November 24th

What: A now nationally organized event, Gobble Gobble Give invites people to participate by donating food, toiletries and clothing and then coordinates a Thanksgiving Day distribution drive where volunteers hand out care packages to low-income and homeless areas.

    Meals on Wheels Central Texas

    When: Nov 24th

What: Meals on Wheels delivers nutritious meals to elderly and disabled people throughout the city. During the Thanksgiving holiday, recipients may sign up to receive special holiday meals. Volunteers are needed for meal pick-up and delivery. Find out how to become a delivery volunteer here.
